The most common roof in Central Oregon

Architectural composition shingles cover the majority of homes in the region, and for good reason: they balance cost, appearance and durability better than anything else on a typical residential roof line. Modern architectural shingles are heavier and more dimensional than the old three-tab product, with better wind performance and a look that reads well on everything from a Bend subdivision home to a Prineville ranch house. They also handle complex roof shapes gracefully, which matters on houses with dormers, multiple valleys and mixed pitches where a panel system gets expensive fast.

GAF and IKO shingle systems

We install GAF and IKO shingle systems and will help you compare them honestly. GAF offers a 50-year non-prorated option on the qualifying products we install. IKO's out-of-the-box coverage runs 10 or 15 years depending on the line, with limited lifetime and 50-year options available. Those are manufacturer terms and they vary by specific product, so we go over the actual coverage for whatever you pick before the contract is signed. On top of the manufacturer coverage, our own workmanship warranty is 20 years, because most roof failures come from installation details rather than the shingle itself.

Installation details that decide the lifespan

A shingle roof is a layered system, not just the top surface. Ice and water membrane at eaves and valleys, correct underlayment, new metal flashing instead of reused pieces, properly sealed pipe boots, correct nail placement and pattern, and balanced attic ventilation all determine whether you get the full service life out of the product. Under-ventilated attics cook shingles from below and shorten roof life significantly in our summer heat, so we check intake and exhaust as part of every job rather than treating it as an add-on. Getting these right is where the 20-year workmanship warranty comes from.

Composition Roofing FAQs

What is composition roofing?

Composition roofing refers to asphalt-based shingles built on a fiberglass or organic mat, surfaced with mineral granules that protect against UV and weather. It is the most common residential roof covering in the country, available in three-tab and thicker architectural styles. The granulated surface is what gives the shingles their color and much of their weather resistance.

Are composition shingles a good choice for Central Oregon homes?

Yes, composition shingles are widely used across Central Oregon and perform well when properly installed and ventilated. They suit most home styles, cost less up front than metal, and can be repaired in sections. The things to plan for here are UV exposure at elevation, snow and ice at the eaves, and adequate attic ventilation so the roof deck stays cool in winter. Quality of installation matters as much as the shingle you pick.

How long do composition shingles typically last?

Composition shingle roofs commonly last somewhere in the 20-to-30-year range, with architectural shingles generally outlasting basic three-tab products. That range moves based on the specific product, installation quality, attic ventilation, sun exposure, and whether the roof gets maintained. Poor ventilation and trapped heat are among the fastest ways to shorten a shingle roof's life. Treat published ranges as general guidance rather than a promise for any particular roof.

What are the advantages of composition roofing?

Composition roofing is the most cost-effective way to put a durable, warrantied roof on most homes. It comes in a wide range of colors and profiles, looks at home in nearly any neighborhood, is straightforward to repair in sections, and materials are readily available. That combination of price, familiarity, and repairability is why it remains the default choice for so many homeowners.

What is the difference between composition and metal roofing?

Composition is asphalt shingles installed in overlapping courses; metal is panels or shingles of coated steel or aluminum. Composition costs less up front and is easier and cheaper to patch. Metal costs more initially, typically lasts much longer, sheds snow better, and is noncombustible. Appearance, budget, expected years of ownership, and how exposed the roof is usually decide it.

Metal roofing

Can damaged composition shingles be repaired?

Yes, damaged composition shingles can often be replaced individually or by section, which is one of the material's biggest advantages. The practical limits are matching color and product on a weathered roof, and the brittleness of older shingles, which can crack during the work. If the roof is near the end of its life or losing shingles in multiple areas, repairs become a stopgap rather than a fix.

How can I tell when composition shingles are wearing out?

Watch for granule loss showing up in gutters and downspouts, shingles curling or cupping at the edges, cracking, bald patches, and missing shingles after wind. Exposed underlayment or decking anywhere on the roof is a clear signal, and so are leaks that keep coming back in different spots. A roof showing several of these at once is usually telling you it is nearing replacement.

What type of roofing is best for Central Oregon?

There is no single best material here — the right choice depends on your home, your budget, and how the roof is exposed. Metal sheds snow well, holds up to UV and wind, and is noncombustible, which matters in wildfire-prone areas. Composition shingles cost less up front, suit a wide range of home styles, and are straightforward to repair. Roof pitch, architecture, HOA or neighborhood expectations, and how long you plan to stay in the home usually settle the decision.

How long does a roof typically last?

Roof lifespan varies widely by material, ranging from a couple of decades for many composition shingle systems to considerably longer for quality metal roofing. Installation quality, attic ventilation, maintenance, and sun and snow exposure all move that number up or down. Central Oregon roofs deal with intense UV at elevation, big daily temperature swings, and snow load, so a roof here can age differently than the same product in a milder climate. The realistic answer for your roof comes from an inspection, not a chart.
